Local Pest Bird Control Measures

Watch the birdy

As well as being a nuisance, some varieties of bird can cause problems through damage to residential and business premises including unsightly and corrosive guano. Damaged caused can include:

Building erosion – Bird guano not only looks unsightly, it’s also corrosive. Bird droppings can actually eat through stone, paint and metal if not cleaned quickly and professionally.

Machinery damage – Service equipment – including air conditioning units can be seriously damaged by bird droppings which can erode the workings to the point that the machine stops working or is considered a health hazard.

Vehicle damage – Most of us have experienced the inconvenience of returning to a car park to find that our car has been used as a toilet. This, however, can have greater consequences than a trip to the car wash if not cleaned quickly and properly. Bird guano can make light work of eating through the paintwork on vehicles – leading to expensive repair work.

Damage to goods – Birds are adept at finding their way into spaces; particularly where food is involved. Every year, tons of contaminated food is thrown away by factories and warehouses who have suffered from bird invasions.

Bird nests – Guttering, downpipes and eaves are hugely attractive to nesting birds and, can lead to costly blockages. More seriously, birds nests close to electricals can cause fires if not spotted in time.

Ventilation – Blockages caused by birds nests can also lead to fumes from heating systems not being dispersed correctly. If left unchecked, this can result in serious health conditions and, in extreme cases, even death where carbon monoxide and other gases have built up inside a building.

Birds such as pigeons and seagulls can be a particular menace for commercial businesses which serve food such as cafes, bars and hotels and can even be a danger to human beings. Every year, there are reports of attacks by aggressive seagulls – some of which result in minor injuries requiring hospital treatment.

As well as personal injuries, birds can pose a danger to public health. There are currently 110 known pathogens which affect birds, including viruses, fungi and bacteria which can be spread through airborne and foodborne diseases. Urban birds also often carry parasites which feed on human blood including bird mites, pigeon fleas and martin bugs as well as destructive insects which feed on fabrics and food products.
