Winter Pest Control: Protect Your Home This Winter
July 18, 2019
Christmas is over and we’re all into our new year resolutions……..well some of us
Its cold and wet, with little day light, its no wonder January is such a depressing month, just when you think it couldn’t get any worse, somethings taken to your selection box or fancy biscuit collection in the cupboard or it sounds like you have inherited some lodgers in the loft who aren’t even paying any rent.
Mom and the kids are petrified and dad wants to be brave for the sake of his dignity, but he know its time to call the experts in and get the problem sorted properly.
There are things that could have prevented the problem in the first place, they may seem like common sense but a bit to much hassle.
We have listed below common problems inside and outside the home that could have been repaired or changed, poor little mickey would never have got into that box of shortbread in the first place.
Maintain your garden
Rodents love overgrown grass and bushes, everything is a predator to them, birds, cats and dogs.
Out of control borders and foot long grass provide the perfect shelter for rodents to move around unnoticed, they will look for potential food sources or harbourage.
If these bushes are weeds are around the perimeter wall of the property, these rodents are 12 inches from the inside the home/business and will look for potential weakness in the structure to dig down or access the property through damaged/missing brickwork.
Most buildings have pipework for water, drainage or electric cable passing through an external wall, if these are not finished correctly they may be an open door for rodents to access into the cavity and occupy your loft and any other room where they have access.
Its always good to remember that an fully grown adult mouse can general pass through a 10mm hole with ease.
A common problem we see is that air vents on the external walls are damaged and they also allow easy access to the property, mesh covers can help with proofing the vents while still allowing the airflow and prevent damp.
Over time the mortar in between the bricks gets damaged and this can also allow access, we would advise that some minor pointing repairs are carried out the stop any problems just using a ready mix sand & cement.
Where there are gaps at the bottom of the door, installing brush strips serves as a dual purpose in preventing drafts and also preventing rodent access.
Food Storage & Housekeeping
As rodents have such sharp teeth and strength in the jaws they easily bite through metal wiring etc.
cardboard and thin plastic food packaging will provide these rodents with an easy meal, always remember to keep these foods packaged in sealable containers such as tupperware and keep them on high selves and cupboards.
Never leave black bags of food or packaging waste outside the property, it needs to go in the bin.
Rodents are opportunists and not only are you providing them with an easy meal and potential nesting material, you are also bringing them to your doorstep.
